Increasing Your Email Marketing Open Rate

Lately, I've been getting a number of questions about how to get people to open their e-newsletters and e-blasts. Well, there are a number of things to take into consideration.

1. Use an email marketing service such as Constant Contact. Constant Contact works diligently with all the various ISP's to make sure your e-newsletters and e-blasts end up in the recipients inbox and not in their junk/spam folder.

2. Make sure you're FROM line contains your name or company name which your recipients are familiar with. No one will open an email unless they know who it's from. Also, make sure your from name is consistent.

3. Your subject line. You have about three seconds to catch the attention of your recipient. The subject line should always tell the reader what he or she will find inside once they open up the email It should attract their attention with either a call to action or an interesting topic. I know... being creative with the subject line can be difficult at times, but in the long run it's worth the extra thought.

4. Try not to use the word free in your subject line. The ISP's see that as a spam flag and your email might not end up in the recipients inbox. And if it does, the recipient might also see it as just another come on sales email. Try using, words like: no cost, or complimentary.

5. If you HAVE to use the word free... Don't type it in all capitol letters! FREE is a big spam flag waver. Matter of fact, don't type ANY of the words in all caps! Also, don't use the asterisk symbol...or any other symbol for that matter! **FREE** or $ale Today!!!!!! Do you see all those exclamation marks? Avoid excessive use of all exclamation marks. Once again, the ISP's can interpret this as a spam email.

I hope these 6 tips will help you to improve your email open rate. And just so you know, anything over 25% is a good open rate (unless you are a non-profit, then your open rate should be at least 30%).
